The SCARABEO 50 is without doubt an original phenomenon in terms of habits, lifestyles and functionality. A scooter which year after year has managed to hold on to its leadership position in a market in constant ferment, becoming a precise benchmark for urban mobility and design concept.
| What's in a name: SCARABEO |
For the ancient Egyptians, a sacred creature and good luck charm, so the Scarabeo is also sacred for Aprilia. The name Scarabeo was, in fact, given to the first motocross 50 cc produced by Ivano Beggio at the end of the 1960s.
A dream for youngsters of the time, but also the start of a great dream which has today come true. A name which has helped make history for Aprilia and continues to do so today, now identifying a precise concept of urban mobility a large diameter wheel scooter, a vehicle which more than any other has determined an important turning point in the evolution of the motor scooter.
Rivers of ink have been dedicated to the success of this product and, as a result, the name Scarabeo has gone beyond gratifying sales targets to become a genuine lifestyle phenomenon.
Today Scarabeo identifies a style, a choice, a complete range of large diameter wheel scooters in five capacities (50/100/125/150/200 cc) and in different versions (two-stroke, Ditech, four-stroke) to satisfy all about-town mobility needs and boasting an original and exclusive charisma. [Note that not all of these models are available in the US yet]
The personality of the Scarabeo has become so well established that it now has a life of its own, identifying a product, a lifestyle and exclusiveness, with an ever stronger and better known identity.
New versions, style and technological updates, ever more avant-garde versions setting the standards for the entire sector Scarabeo continues to grow, reinforcing its identity and offering new solutions for styles, needs and mobility requirements.

The Scarabeo 50 is easy to ride, manoeuvrable and light. A practical vehicle, well suited to female users thanks to its simplicity and ease of use.
A product aimed at all those who consider the scooter as an intelligent instrument to satisfy the need for mobility in the most gratifying way possible, but also an accessory to their life style.
With more than 500,000 units produced since 1990, the fascination of the SCARABEO 50 is still today unaltered. Without doubt part of the Aprilia heritage, a heritage which goes beyond the individual product, it represents a major achievement for this dynamic Italian motorcycle company which has nevertheless decided to renew the look and technology of this exceptional scooter, proposing a completely new SCARABEO with avant-garde design and technical features.
The Scarabeo design combines modernity and traditional elements in just the right proportions in a mix of forms with long-lasting appeal a perfect combination, imitated and copied by many, but still rich with personality and originality. Its hard to better a legend, but sensitivity to new market trends and the needs of a consumer ever more aware of values such as environmental friendliness, energy savings and functionality has enabled Aprilia to adapt the SCARABEO to the new requirements without altering the original concept, that courageous and successful idea which has brought the scooter such impressive results in terms of sales and image.
As well as modifications to the look, also of crucial importance is adoption of the new electronic direct injection 50 cc engine, the Aprilia air cooled DITECH. This applies the extraordinary and innovative DITECH technology to the new Aprilia air-cooled engine, further improving the excellent results already achieved with the SR DITECH liquid-cooled in terms of consumption, pollutant emissions and performance.
A year after the launch of DITECH on the SR 50 and the confirmation received from the market of the incredible success of this new engine technology, Aprilia has continued with development and research, applying DITECH electronic direct injection to this new engine and fitting it to another product important for sales and image. The result is the ultra-new SCARABEO 50 i.e. DITECH, a genuine technological revolution combining performance, record consumption and ultra-low emissions.
The Aprilia DITECH is the ideal solution for small capacity scooter engines. This new air version of DITECH maintains the incredible performance and consumption of the liquid-cooled DITECH while respecting the pollution abatement standards of EURO 2 without requiring a catalytic converter. The SCARABEO 50 i.e. DITECH is the first 2-stroke scooter in the world to respect EURO 2 standards without a catalysed exhaust.

APRILIA DITECH Direct Injection Technology
DITECH is a high performance, high specific power, environmentally friendly engine entirely developed and produced by Aprilia Engines. Compact and light, it is technologically advanced, while at the same time having a simple and reliable construction, partly thanks to the significant use of electronics.
This revolutionary electronic direct injection engine represents a new generation in the field of internal combustion energies and is an absolute Aprilia exclusive.
Power, smoothness and reliability at maximum levels, combined with guaranteed comfort with consumption and pollution reduced to a minimum.
The fundamental innovation of the DITECH engine lies in the fact that the petrol no longer enters into the crankcase mixed with the lubricant, as in two-stroke engines. Instead, it is directly injected into the combustion chamber by an injector. The entire process is electronically controlled by means of sensors connected to an electronic control unit.
The advantages of the APRILIA DITECH
- Reduction in fuel and oil consumption
50 km with a litre of fuel
In comparison with a two-stroke engine with catalyser, the Aprilia DITECH engine reduces fuel consumption by 40% in the ECE47 cycle and up to 50% at constant speeds, maintaining performance at levels equal to or higher than that of a two-stroke catalysed air-cooled engine.
Oil consumption reduced by 50%
Considerable financial savings, but also increased convenience, with the engine requiring topping up with oil during services only.
- Improved performance and regular functioning
Engine output is gradual and fully exploitable at all revs and tick over is extremely stable thanks to the regular combustion optimised at all revs. The scooter is surprisingly ridable at all speeds.
Perfect starting even when cold and at all temperatures.
- Reduced pollutant emissions
Pollution reduced by 80%. With respect to a traditional catalysed EURO 1 two-stroke engine, DITECH reduces pollutant emission by 70% (80% less CO carbon oxides and 60% less NC+NOx unburnt hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides), conforming to Euro 2 limits. DITECH air conforms to Euro 2 without requiring catalysing.
Unlike two or four stroke engines with catalysed exhaust, the efficiency of the DITECH system is maintained over time without requiring maintenance or having to replace components.
Longer engine life as only air and oil enter the crankcase. The oil is not transported by the fuel and can deposit more efficiently on the various components and the walls of the cylinder, guaranteeing perfect lubrication.
Operation of the DITECH engine involves numerous sensors and is completely electronically controlled by a control unit performing constant automatic diagnosis of all system components and indicating possible malfunctions in real time.
The injection system is highly reliable as many of the components used, such as the fuel injector, derive from the automobile sector and have thus been tested and produced in millions.
The times and costs of repairs by the dealer are also very low. Controls and calibration of the engine are very simple, thanks to the computerised diagnosis systems used for the service.
No exhaust fumes. Thanks to DITECH, exhaust fumes are almost completely eliminated as are emissions of unburnt oil particles which would otherwise deposit on the riders garments causing an unpleasant smell.
The incredible consumption, pollution and performance results achieved by the SCARABEO 50 i.e. DITECH have been achieved partly thanks to major modifications in the structure of the air-cooled engine with respect to the liquid-cooled DITECH.
- New combustion chamber completely redesigned to further reduce losses of hydrocarbons from the exhaust. The smaller and more compact shape of the combustion chamber together with the new injection nozzle help achieve the pollution abatement limits imposed by EURO 2 standards without requiring a catalytic converter.
- New lighter aluminium cylinder with considerably higher cooling capacity than traditional cast iron cylinders. Encrustation in the cylinder is usually worse in an air-cooled system than in a liquid-cooled system. To eliminate this problem and improve reliability, the traditional cast iron cylinder has been replaced with an aluminium cylinder. This is lighter, has a higher cooling capacity and guarantees optimum performance.
- As a further contribution to improving cooling and resistance to encrustation, the profiles of the exhaust ports have been redesigned, together with the duct and the fan, to optimise the flow of engine cooling air. Also new are the fins on the engine casing.
- New piston shape to improve performance and reliability.
- The variator has been adapted for about-town use, favouring handling, smooth output and take-off.
Great efforts have been made to keep the price of the SCARABEO 50 i.e. DITECH at the same level as the Scarabeo 50 carburettor version, although the high technological and style content and advantages in terms of consumption and emission make this product the most interesting in its segment.
Following adoption of the new DITECH engine, it was also decided to technically update those mechanical components responsible for the SCARABEO 50s continued position as a reference point for performance, safety and comfort. With respect to the 2-stroke carburettor version, a number of components have been improved on the basis of the considerable experience gained on all parts of the scooter.
- New reinforced frame in high tensile tubular steel with modified design and different inclination to the steering stem, improving handling considerably.
- The front fork has been modified and structurally reinforced to further increase the already remarkable stability and capacity to absorb uneven road surfaces (80 mm travel).
- 220 mm dia. front disk brake with double opposed 30 mm dia. piston and 190 mm rear disk brake with double opposed piston for optimum active safety, guaranteeing consistently responsive and efficient braking, resistant to fatigue and high modulability.
- The engine uses a dynamic crankcase cooling system. The duct and fan have been redesigned to optimise the flow of fresh clean air introduced into the crankcase to lower operating temperature, thus improving the performance of the system and reducing wear of variator components.
- The Scarabeo has an automatic starter, yet another detail making the scooter more comfortable to use
- Motorcycle style headlight with positioning, main and dipped beam, multifocal with clear glass for high efficiency lighting.
- New long and well padded saddle further improving the already natural position for the rider. Also new are the handles in the rear luggage rack providing a comfortable and secure grip when parking the vehicle.
- New 8 litre capacity tank. Together with the ultra-low consumption of the DITECH engine, this guarantees great riding range
Significant changes to the look and graphics to bring new life to the SCARABEO 50 i.e. DITECH design:
- Chromed headlight moulding
